THE DALLES - Kellen Sparkes delivered a two-out single in the seventh inning to help the Corvallis High baseball team to a 5-4 nonconference win over The Dalles-Wahtonka on Thursday.

Sparkes singled home pinchrunner Cory Humphrey to break a 4-4 tie.

Aaron Corwin, who had a two-run single in a four-run fifth inning, kept The Dalles-Wahtonka from scoring in the bottom of the inning.

CHS coach Eric Dazey said the Spartans did a good job of making adjustments at the plate in the later innings.

CHS (7-2) returns to action on Tuesday with the first game of a three-game Mid-Willamette Conference series with Lebanon at Lebanon.

MONROE - The Dragons knocked in their baserunners en route to the nonconference win.

Monroe (1-3) had seven RBIs on eight runs. Monroe coach Bill Crowson said not leaving runners on base was the key for the Dragons.

"We definitely hit the ball better, hit the ball better with runners in scoring position," Crowson said.

The Dragons took a 6-2 lead into the top of the sixth and then watched as UVC scored four. Monroe walked two and Ryan Graf made the Dragons pay with a three-run triple.

Monroe sealed it with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

PHILOMATH - The Warriors couldn't overcome the play of Cody Garner in the nonleague loss.

"Basically what happened is we let one guy beat us," PHS coach Terry Stephenson said. "The Garner kid is a good player."

Gardner hit a solo home run and a two-run double and struck out seven with one walk.

The Warriors (4-3) could not make up the difference.

"We just didn't compete at the plate when we needed to and he was outstanding on the hill and at the plate," Stephenson said.

PHS plays a doubleheader at North Valley on Saturday.
