Cory England went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs and Aaron Corwin struck out six over four innings to lead the Corvallis High baseball team to a 6-1 nonconference win over McNary on Tuesday.

The game was moved from Keizer to CHS.

The Spartans (1-0) are home against North Eugene on Friday.

EUGENE - Crescent Valley managed just one hit in a nonconference loss to 6A Sheldon in its season-opener.

"We didn't hit the ball well," said CV coach Jim Owre. "They threw a very good pitcher at us and we had first-game jitters."

Sheldon broke open the game in the second inning, scoring seven runs.

"We made errors at the wrong times," Owre said. "They always seemed to have runners on that scored."

CV finished the game with six errors, which led to six unearned runs for Sheldon.

Grant Mattes had the only hit for the Raiders who are scheduled to play Sandy today, another 6A school.

AURORA - North Marion scored three times in the bottom of the fifth inning to earn the nonleague win over the Warriors on Monday.

Philomath (0-1) took a 2-0 lead in the second with Kyle Hansen and Jason Nikkel driving in the runs.

PHS was limited to three hits. The Warriors are at Pleasant Hill for a doubleheader on Saturday.

Softball

EUGENE - Philomath High jumped right into the softball season with a game at defending state champion Marist.

The Warriors couldn't quite stretch the game to seven as the Spartans took a 9-0 lead in the third and finished it in the bottom of the sixth on 2008 player of the year Nyree White's three-run home run.

White went 3-for-4 with five runs batted in.

"She's a one-person wrecking crew," PHS coach Dave Dunham said.

Deanna Page went 1-for-2 with one RBI for the Warriors (0-1).

The Warriors host Pleasant Hill for a doubleheader on Saturday.

Golf

WOODBURN - The Corvallis High girls golf team took home first place in a four-team scramble at OGA.

Each school had three teams of two players. Corvallis finished with a 283, followed by McNary (289), West Salem (291) and Roseburg (301).

CHS's Katie Zajicek and Karly Laney took third place in individual teams with an 82. Kayla Laney and Haley Schuster posted an 87 and freshmen Gioia Spatafora and Emily Edwards had a 114.
