A weekend in the desert will determine if the Oregon State women's soccer program's lengthy NCAA tournament drought will be slaked.

The Beavers (11-6-1, 3-4 Pac-10) are 19th in the NCAA Ratings Percentage Index and can clinch an at-large postseason berth with a victory against Arizona State (7-7-3, 0-6-1) at 6 tonight or at Arizona (1-6-0, 4-13-1) at 10 a.m. Sunday. OSU's last NCAA berth was in 1994.

"It's a huge weekend for the program and we are going to go down there and give it everything we have," coach Linus Rhode said. "We've done a good job of sticking with our game plan in recent weeks and have come away with some positive results.

"We need to do the same thing this weekend against a pair of good teams."

The NCAA Selection Committee will meet in Indianapolis over the weekend and will announce the 64-team field on Monday.

The tournament begins on Nov. 13 at 16 regional sites and as many as six Pac-10 teams could be selected, as the Pac-10 is No. 1 in league RPI.

The Beavers positioned themselves for postseason by edging Washington 2-1 on Nov. 1 in their final home game. Leading scorers Chelsea Buckland (6-2-14) and Melissa Peck (5-2-12) tallied second-half goals to give OSU its first victory over the Huskies since 2005.

OSU should have the edge defensively tonight. OSU goalie Ashley Wood is fourth in the Pac-10 with an 0.75 goals-against average; her ASU counterpart, Alyssa Gillmore, has a 1.93 average.

ASU's leading scorer is Alexandra Elston (5-6-16).

The OSU men (7-6-2,

3-4-0) face two ranked Pac-10 foes this weekend as they play at No. 5 UCLA (9-3-2, 4-1-2) at 7 tonight and No. 25 San Diego State (6-4-5, 3-2-2) at noon Sunday.

Tonight's game features two of the Pac-10's top scorers, Danny Mwanga of the Beavers and Kyle Nakazawa of the Bruins. Mwanga is second in the Pac-10 with 10 goals and is OSU's first double-digit scorer since 2001, when current LA Galaxy player Alan Gordon scored 11. Nakazawa is third in the Pac-10 with nine goals.

UCLA defeated OSU 3-1 in Corvallis on Oct. 2.

The Beavers are looking to sweep the season series against the Aztecs. OSU prevailed 2-1 at Lorenz Field on Oct. 4 on Mwanga's golden goal at 1:43 of overtime.

SDSU's Reza Raymundo is tied for fourth in the Pac-10 with six goals; goalie Brad Byrns is second in the league with 61 saves.

Wood honored

Senior goalie Ashley Wood, a Corvallis High graduate, has been named second-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced on Thursday.

A student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution to be eligible for CoSIDA honors.

Wood is 7-1-0 this season and ranks fourth in the Pac-10 Conference with a 0.75 goals-against average, with 18 saves and three shutouts. She is 13-4-1 lifetime as a starter.

She has a 3.80 cumulative GPA in exercise science. A two-time Pacific-10 Conference all-academic selection, she is the first OSU player to be named to the all-district squad since 2007, when Jodie Taylor earned second-team honors.

Nominations and voting for the Academic All-America programs are conducted by members of CoSIDA.
