Corvallis police are looking for three men who allegedly forced their way into a southside home Thursday night, bound the occupants with duct tape, abducted one man at gunpoint and left in a stolen pickup.
Four adults were home at the time of the incident but no one was harmed, police said, and the man who was kidnapped was driven to a location outside the city limits and then released by his captors.
"He drove that truck back to the residence," said Sgt. Jim Zessin, a spokesman for the Corvallis Police Department.
All three suspects reportedly were armed, Zessin said. The residents' cell phones were stolen along with cash, and the house was ransacked for other valuables.
Two of the suspects wore masks, police said. The third was described as a light-skinned Hispanic male, and police were working on a sketch based on witness descriptions.
Sgt. Jim Zessin described the victims as roommates who are not related to one another.
"Somehow they got each other loose, and one of them went to the neighbor," Zessin said. "That's how the report came in."
Police did not immediately release any of the victims' names. At this stage, Zessin said, that information could expose them to retaliation or compromise the investigation.
The three-bedroom house at 177 S.E. Partridge Place stands at the rear of a quiet cul-de-sac off Goodnight Avenue.
Contacted by the newspaper on Friday, the residents offered some additional details about the crime.
One young woman, who declined to give her name, said no one at the house recognized any of the robbers. She said two of the men had handguns and the third had a Taser, which he used to threaten her.
She said the men were after "anything they could get," stealing DVDs, a DVD player, shoes and other items in addition to phones and cash.
"We didn't have enough for them," she said.
A neighbor said she had talked to one of the victims just before midnight on Thursday.
"She was shaking and crying," said Cyndee Corry, who lives down the street. "She said, ‘We don't know what to do.'"
Corry said the young woman told her the suspects had threatened to kill the man who was abducted if anyone reported the crime, but Corry told her they had to get the authorities involved.
"I said, ‘I'm calling the police.'"
Corry said she and her boyfriend were awake at the time of the incident but hadn't heard anything suspicious until the neighbor knocked on their door.
Corry described the residents of the house as friendly 20-somethings who didn't cause any trouble.
"This is just insane for Corvallis," she said.
Another neighbor, Eric Bacon, said he slept through the whole thing and was astonished such a crime could have occurred on his street.
"This is just a quiet neighborhood," he said.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Corvallis Police Department's investigations division at 766-6975 or Detective Brett Roach at 766-6431.
"This is unusual for Corvallis," Zessin said. "It's not something that happens all the time."
He cautioned residents to be careful about letting strangers into their homes.
"Don't open your door to people you don't know, especially late at night," Zessin said.
