Science society honors Nye

Oregon State University professor Mary Jo Nye has been awarded the prestigious Sarton Medal from the History of Science Society. The Sarton Medal is the highest honor that the society gives scholars. It recognizes a lifetime of achievement and is presented annually.

Nye is the Horning Professor of the Humanities and a history professor at OSU. She was presented the award at the society's meeting Nov. 3 in Vancouver, B.C.

In presenting the award, Alan Rocke, a professor with Case Western Reserve University, cited Nye's productivity as one of the reasons she was honored. Nye has written a number of books, including "Molecular Reality: A Perspective on the Scientific Work of Jean Perrin," "Science in the Provinces" and "From Chemical Philosophy to Theoretical Chemistry: Dynamics of Matter and Dynamics of Disciplines, 1800-1950." Her latest book, "Blackett: Physics, War, and Politics in the Twentieth Century," came out in 2004.

OSU senior gets top FFA award

Ryan Scholz, of Newberg and senior in Oregon State University's College of Agricultural Sciences, is the winner of the 2006 American Star in Agriscience award given by the National FFA Organization. The American Star is FFA's highest honor.

Scholz was selected as the top finisher from more than 3,000 entrants. He is the first Oregon FFA member to receive this national recognition in 20 years.

Among his accomplishments at OSU are undergraduate studies on the use of sheep to control a non-

native weed. Scholz is pursuing a double major in animal science and bioresource research.

Military News

Air Force Airman 1st Class William D. Anderson has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Anderson is a 2004 graduate of Crescent Valley High School and the son of Marshall and Karen Anderson of Corvallis.

College honor roll

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Seven local students have received academic distinction for their studies at Whitman College. Academic distinction is conferred on full-time students who earn a 3.5 grade-point average or higher.

They are:

• Melissa Andreas, sophomore, graduate of Corvallis High School, daughter of Jerrie Andreas of Aloha and James Andreas of Corvallis

• Sara Bowman, junior psychology major, graduate of CHS, daughter of James and Sally Bowman of Corvallis.

• Jeffrey DeGroot, junior, graduate of CHS, son of Elisabeth DeGroot of Corvallis.

• Noah Koerper, senior philosophy major, graduate of Crescent Valley High School, son of Greg Koerper and Patricia Berman of Corvallis.

• Sally Sorte, junior English major, graduate of CHS, daughter of Bruce and Joanne Sorte of Corvallis.

• Andrea Wendel, junior economics major, graduate of CHS, daughter of Dee Wendel and Peter Wendel of Corvallis.

• Johannah Withrow-Robinson, junior geology-

environmental studies major, graduate of CHS, daughter of Brad and Tina Withrow-Robinson of Albany.

Local foundation names officers

The Philomath Community Foundation has elected new officers.

They are: Karla Robbins, president; Joe Malcom, vice president; Steven Kearsley, treasurer; and Cheryl Black, secretary.

Miller wins award for outdoor book

Jeffrey C. Miller of Corvallis is the recipient of a 2006 National Outdoor Book Award. Miller received the award, along with Daniel H. Janzen and Winifred Hallwachs, both of Philadelphia, for their work on a new book, "100 Caterpillars," in the design and artistic merit category.

The National Outdoor Book Award program is sponsored by the National Outdoor Book Award Foundation, Idaho State University and the Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education.

Welty named head of neonatology

Dr. Stephen E. Welty, a 1974 graduate of Corvallis High School and 1979 graduate of Oregon State University, has been named a Dean W. Jeffers Endowed Chair in Neonatology by the Columbus Children's Hospital and the Nationwide Foundation in Columbus, Ohio.

Welty was recruited to Columbus Children's Hospital in 2000 and became chief of the section of neonatology, and program director for the fellowship in Neonatal Perinatal Medicine in 2001. He is also chief of the division of neonatology of the department of pediatrics at the Ohio State University School of Medicine and Public Health, where he serves as associate professor. He also is an investigator in the Center for Perinatal Research at the Columbus Children's Research Institute.

He received his M.D. from Oregon Health & Science University in 1982 and completed his residency and chief residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.
