A 6-month-old boy from Grand Ronde was critically injured Wednesday after his mother, whom authorities suspect of drunken driving, crashed her van into a Lincoln County creek. According to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, the crash happened on Widow Creek Road in Rose Lodge, about eight miles east of Otis.
A married couple, who live on Widow Creek Road, came across the crash shortly after it happened and saw that the blue 1999 Ford Explorer was upside down in the creek, half submerged in the rushing water.
While the wife called 911, the husband rushed to the overturned van. He rescued Kylie Gandy, 2, and Austin Gandy, 3, freeing them from their car seats in the back and getting them safely to shore. He then helped extract the driver, Amber Lee Gandy, 25, who is the mother of the children.
The rescuer, who wanted to remain anonymous, then learned that 6-month-old Kameron Gandy was in a car seat in the front passenger seat. He went back into the creek to remove Kameron from the van, but the boy wasn't breathing and didn't have a pulse. The entire Gandy family was transported to Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital.
Medics were able to revive Kameron, but he remained in critical condition Thursday. The infant was flown via helicopter ambulance to Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland. The older children and the mother quickly recovered.
According to the sheriff's office and the Oregon State Police, Amber Gandy was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, which remains under investigation. Police said criminal charges are pending.
