P.E.O. Oregon Scholarship winners
Two Corvallis women were recently honored as recipients of P.E.O. Oregon Marguerite Scholarships. Rebecca Otto and Jennifer Yarrow were selected after their nomination by Chapter CL of P.E.O. in Corvallis. Otto graduated from Crescent Valley High School in 2008 and is a freshman at the University of Portland with an interest in languages, archeology and international studies. Yarrow was a 2003 graduate of Crescent Valley High School and is starting her final year at Oregon State University majoring in earth science/geology.
P.E.O. is an international organization assisting women to further their education. The Marguerite Scholarship is awarded to Oregon women as they attend an Oregon college.
Pregnancy Center volunteers honored
Options Pregnancy Resource Centers volunteers Haroldine “Deanie” John, Jane Salter and Carol Walters were three of 150 pregnancy center volunteers that received Presidential Volunteer Service Awards on Friday at a ceremony hosted by Assistant Secretary for Health, Admiral Joxel Garcia, MD, M.B.A. and the White House USA Freedom Corps. The award is given to Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service.
Options Pregnancy Resource Centers offer free services to people facing unplanned pregnancies and related issues.
Cutter gets fellowship
Oregon State University Honors College student Dann Cutter was awarded a Roundtable on Entrepreneurship Education Fellowship at Stanford University for fall 2008. The REE fellowship will focus on entrepreneurial development among interdisciplinary and international teams. This year’s focus is on food-related sustainability and supply issues worldwide.
The fellowship is awarded annually to a group of students representing international programs in entrepreneurship. Cutter was one of 10 United States students to receive the honor.
A full-time senior double-degree student in finance and chemistry, Cutter hopes to bring back his experience at Stanford to the Austin Entrepreneurship Program, and is working with Dr. Christopher Klemm to provide exposure to the REE for OSU students and faculty. Cutter also works at the Hatfield Marine Science Center as a network analyst, and holds elected office as a city councilor for his hometown of Waldport from which he commutes several times weekly to OSU. He is planning a career in medicine or law.
Lions scholarships
Stephanie Anderson of Albany and Katherine Brean of Lebanon were given guide dog scholarships by the Corvallis Lions Club to help with college expenses. Both are members of the 4-H Eye Raisers club, a group that trains dogs to help people with impaired vision. Anderson has 10 guide dog puppies and is an undergraduate at Linfield College. Brean is raising her fifth puppy, and it will go with her to Western Oregon University.
Lions club leaders
The new Corvallis Lions club officers and directors for 2008/09 were recently named. They are President Craig Bartlett, Adair Village; Vice-President Gerald Stauber; Secretary Mark Vomocil; Tail Twister Mark Webber; and Lion Tamer Fred Hirsch of Corvallis. New directors are Tim Brewer and Earl Jorgensen of Albany and Ed Cohn and Roger Weaver of Corvallis.
Poetry contest awards
The Arts Center Youth Poetry Contest winners for 2008 were recently named. Bethany Llewellyn won First Place Category Two for her poem, “Magic Stitches.” Sarah Osborne won First Place Category Three for her poem, “Echo.” David Hamilton won First Place Category Four for his poem, “The Orange Banner Stood.” Ronin Gillen won Second Place Category Two for his poem, “Volcano Floods.” Dacia Williams won Second Place Category Three for her poem, “The Anchor.” Kirsten R. White won Third Place Category Two for her poem, “The Dark.” Spencer Light won Third Place Category Three for his poem, “Wing 1, No. 11.” Owen Stellbrink won Fourth Place Category Two for his poem, “Hide and Seek Turtle.” Ylinia Huidor won Fourth Place Category Three for her poem, “Wing 2, No. 1.” Madolyn Miller won Fifth Place Category Two for her poem, “Run Run Run.” Bryce Rasmussen won Fifth Place Category Three for his poem, “My Town.” Alyssa Hart won Honorable Mention Category Two for her poem, “Dots.” Drew Moore won Honorable Mention Category Two for his poem, “Useless Things.” Whitman Spitzer won Honorable Mention Category Two for his poem, “Spring Time Come.” Christian Whanqer won Honorable Mention Category Two for his poem, “Useless Things.”
