Haruguchi sets school record in 200-yard butterfly

Gazette-Times

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Sophomore Saori Haruguchi set a school record in the 200-yard butterfly and the Oregon State swim team finished in seventh place on Saturday at the Pacific-10 Conference meet for the fourth consecutive year.

The Beavers scored 471 team points to easily outdistance Northwest rivals Washington (411) and Washington State (311). The four-day event was held at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool; Arizona edged Stanford to defend its 2006 title.

Haruguchi finished fifth in the 200 butterfly in 1:56.24 to break the old school record of 1:57.42, set by former OSU All-American Naya Higashijima in 2003. Kayla Rawlings placed 11th in the same event in 2:01.23.

Sandy Hong took 15th place in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 16:50.31, the second-fastest time in school history. Megan Evans placed 11th in the 200 breaststroke in 2:16.75; Felicia Castaneda was 15th in 2:17.66.

The 400 relay foursome of Haruguchi, Castaneda, Rawlings, and Anna Crandall finished eighth in 3:26.44.

Team scores: Arizona, 1481.5; Stanford, 1410; California, 1355; UCLA, 1024.5; USC, 826; Arizona State, 544; Oregon State, 471; Washington, 411; Washington State, 311
