WHO’S HOT

Matt Moore and Mike Riley

The quarterback and coach were easy scapegoats for a slow start to the season. After three straight wins and an upset of the No. 3 team in the nation, the season looks promising.

WHAT’S NOT

Southern California’s BCS hopes

After three close calls, the Trojans finally fell to an unranked team. Voters and the computer won’t like that.

TURNING POINT

The Beavers have been notoriously slow starters in the second half, but not this time. They forced USC to punt on the opening drive and then scored on a 59-yard drive on their first possession. They kept it up and won the quarter 17-7.

KEY STAT

100

When a running back reaches that milestone the Beavers win. This time it was backup Clinton Polk who delivered.

INJURY REPORT

€ RB Yvenson Bernard (ankle) and WR Ruben Jackson (ankle) didn’t play from injuries suffered last week, but C Kyle DeVan (knee) made it through the game.

€ DE Joe Lemma (ankle) aggravated his injury from two weeks ago, but continued to play.

€ QB Matt Moore (jammed finger) wasn’t slowed down after being hurt on his fourth pass of the day.

NEWTON RETURNS

Senior TE Joe Newton had been in an offensive slump, but he caught four passes for 41 yards and a touchdown. Newton moved into 14th pace for the most career OSU receptions with 94, and tied Roddy Tompkins (1996-99) in career receiving TDs at sixth with 12.

FAST STARTERS

The Beavers continue their trend of starting fast offensively. They scored a touchdown on the first drive of the game for the sixth time this season. They have outscored opponents 77-34 in the first quarter.

PAYTON’S PLAY

Sophomore FS Bryan Payton continues to make the most of his starting opportunity as Al Afalava shakes off the effects of a concussion. He made his first career interception, stopping a USC drive in the first half. He took it away from WR Dwayne Jarrett in the end zone and returned it 52 yards.

BIG PLAY SAMMIE

Sammie Stroughter had his third punt return for a touchdown to tie a Pacific-10 Conference record for most in a season. It was 70 yards long, which was the seventh-longest in OSU history.

USC NOTES

€ This ends USC’s streak of 27 consecutive Pac-10 wins, which dates back to a triple overtime loss to California in 2003.

€ OSU forced four turnovers. That Cal loss was the last time the Trojans turned the ball over four times.
