OSU women’s soccer wins own tournament

Corvallis Gazette-Times

The Oregon State soccer team defeated New Hampshire 4-0 at Lorenz Field on Sunday to win the OSU Soccer Classic.

OSU and Oregon, which defeated Iona 3-2 in Sunday’s first game, each won twice, but on the tiebreaker the Beavers had a superior goal differential (+8 to +2). New Hampshire and Iona each had two losses and were tied on goal differential (-5), so Iona took third place on the next tiebreaker, total goals scored (two to zero).

OSU junior Jodie Taylor was named Offensive MVP of the event after getting a goal and an assist on Sunday to raise her totals to three goals and three assists in two games for the tournament. She leads OSU with 14 points (four goals and six assists).

“I am really happy we are scoring loads of goals,” Taylor said. “In previous years I have always been the goal-scorer, but everyone else is scoring goals this year.

“The main reason is the depth of the squad. It helps when people come in and out to keep legs fresh, and a lot of those players can come in and score a goal.”

Freshman forward Jessica Velazquez, an all-tournament team selection, had a goal and an assist to extend her goal-scoring streak to four consecutive games.

Freshman defender Sophie Clough headed in a corner kick for her first career goal and freshman defender Red Nixon scored her first goal on an assist from Velasquez.

“In the first half we lost our patience a bit, especially in the midfield,” and led only 1-0, OSU coach Steve Fennah said. “We talked about that at halftime and as a result we went and scored some good goals.”

OSU goalie Melissa Onstad had two shutouts and was the all-tournament goalkeeper. She extended her own school record with her 22nd career shutout. OSU’s Monica Storm earned Defensive MVP.
