PULLMAN, Wash. n The Oregon State women’s soccer team was one second away from its first victory of the season on Sunday but UNLV scored the tying goal at 89:59 and the teams were scoreless in overtime in a 1-1 stanoff at the WSU Cougar Classic.
OSU freshman Melissa Peck scored her first collegiate goal in the first half to give OSU a 1-0 lead. It stayed that way until UNLV’s Brie Kuhne scored from eight yards away with just one second remaining.
“It’s obviously disappointing to give up a goal in that fashion,” OSU coach Steve Fennah said. “I can’t the fault the players because they battled and left it all out on the field.
“It was a typical early-season performance, in terms of the quality not always being there. It was definitely a step ahead of Friday, however (a 2-1 loss to Gonzaga).
“There were a number of positives, but we’re disappointed to not get the win.”
Peck headed in a crossing pass from junior forward Jodie Taylor at 24:41.
“It was a very good goal,” Fennah said.
The Beavers outshot UNLV (0-1-1), a 2005 NCAA Tournament team, 4-1 in overtime and 15-14 overall.
OSU (0-1-1) comes home to host the OSU Nike Invitational, which also includes Cal State Northridge, UAB and Northern Colorado, this weekend.
“We’ve got a string of games at home now, and we’re excited to come back to Lorenz Field,” Fennah said. “We’ve been very successful at home and we’ll hopefully put a good run together.”
